Alla Francese

During our last concert, “La Société Secrète,” presented February 9th and 10th, we invited you to find the clue in the program to reveal the theme of the next concert. It is now with great pleasure that we lift the veil of mystery to reveal the name and location of our last concert of the 2018-2019 season!

On June 8, we invite you to attend: Alla Francese.

We propose taking a jump back to 1724, when Couperin published "Goûts réunis" [reunited tastes]. With this collection of suites, Couperin aimed to unify the French style with the melodies of Italy. Interestingly, under the reign of Louis XIV, Lully tried to discourage companies and musicians from importing the Italian style into France. It was following a series of political changes during the 1715-1723 Régence that composers like Jean-Baptiste Quentin, Jean-Marie Leclair, and Louis-Gabriel Guillemain brought forward a synthesis of the two styles, mixing together the singing melodies of Italian violinists with the dances of the most esteemed French suites. Come out for an evening rich with musical contrast, and discover the most beautiful trio and quartet sonatas from an era when the ambition of French music was to adapt to changing tastes while in search of cultural identity.

The performance will be held at the Chapelle Saint-Louis (4230 Drolet Street, Montreal) on June 8th, 2019 at 7pm, at a cost of $20 per person ($10 with the presentation of a student ID) payable by card and cash. Tickets will be available at the door.
